About PICS Bags
Protecting your harvest doesn’t end at the farm gate. PICS Bags give farmers a reliable way to store crops safely — without pesticides or chemicals. Our proven triple-layer, hermetic storage solution shields grains from pests, moisture, and mold, helping reduce post-harvest losses and extend shelf life.
Developed by Purdue University, PICS Bags use simple, low-cost technology designed for long-term storage of most grains and crops. The durable, reusable triple-bagging system helps farmers safeguard their harvests and protect their incomes.

Simple, Affordable, Safe, Effective
When you choose PICS, you invest in a trusted solution that is effective, affordable, attractive, and accessible. The benefits of our products are backed by scientific research, and they deliver sustainable, secure, and profitable crop storage. We deliver the right product, at the right place and at the right time.
The PICS technology is a durable, triple-layer plastic bag that when sealed, limits the oxygen supply to create hermetic conditions, thereby eliminating insect damage in stored grains and legumes.
PICS bags have proven readily affordable in even the most remote villages and can be used for a minimum of 3 years storage. They also provide farmers flexibility to sell grains when prices are high.
PICS bags boost farmers’ health by allowing them to store their grain without the use of insecticides, thus providing chemical-free high-quality food for their families throughout the year.
Technology has been proven to work on nearly all grains and legumes; maize, rice, wheat, millet, sorghum, beans, cowpeas, pigeon chickpeas, lentils, peanuts, chiles, cacao, coffee, and more.
Leaders in Agri-Innovation
PICS Global is a social enterprise serving smallholder family farmers by providing simple, safe, and affordable crop storage and other solutions that boost food security, incomes, local economies, and public health. We are firmly rooted in the hearts of communities and driven by humanitarian values. Our journey began when researchers from Purdue University, funded by USAID, designed the PICS Bag in 1986. With the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the PICS Bag has made us a global force for good.
Our Purpose
We are working to better our world with the growth of family farmers. At PICS we know that when family farmers grow, we all grow together. By working to reduce food waste, fight hunger, and increase smallholder incomes, our farmers can thrive, and we can create shared value for our partners and investors.
Our Heritage
With the PICS Program, we have led the way in smallholder farmer crop storage for over 20 years, working with top agencies and leading institutions in the development sector. Now we are directing our skills and experience towards developing supply chains that empower family farmers and provide essential support for our partners.
Our Philosophy
Our solutions are advancing the global sustainable development agenda on food security, public health, income generation, and economic growth.

Food Security
Harvest loss is a huge threat to sustainable food production. When there is enough harvested, smallholder farmers cannot afford to suffer loss and waste. The PICS Storage bags preserve food grain and promote sustainable agriculture.
SDG Goals 2, 12

Public Health
The PICS hermetic bags technology not only ensures that smallholder farmers can store their grain more effectively, but the quality of the grain supply guarantees nutritional value essential for good health and wellbeing.
SDG Goal 3

Income Generation
Smallholder farmers are central to the regional economic activity in some of the poorest parts of the world. Their livelihoods are the lifeblood of many communities. Our hermetic technology ensures that they can make a living and make a difference in the world.
SDG Goals 1,8

Economic Growth
More agricultural investment is needed to raise smallholder incomes and increase food supply sustainably. With our partnerships, we are supporting smallholder farmers through supply chain strategies and enterprise development solutions.

Testimonials

The main challenge I have always faced in the business is the menace of weevils attacking and spoiling my peas whenever they are in store. Now with PICS bags, the peas look and smell fresh, as if they have just been brought from the farm. They are very effective; they keep your peas in good shape even after long storage.
Hannah Nsiah, Cowpea Farmer

Our grain would get damaged, and we would incur losses. But now with these PICS bags, our grain now lasts longer, and our money is safe.
Anna Wambua, Grain Trader

“When we first opened the PICS bags after two weeks, we found the weevils at the bottom and all dead! I was really impressed. Last season I harvested 15 bags of maize but only managed to save two. I had to sell the others at a throwaway price. I have tried all means to preserve my maize with no success, and because PICS bags have worked so well, I have bought more bags, so they don't run out.”
Ruth Wekesa, Maize Farmer
